Library document delivery service

What is the MGH document delivery service?

If you wish to consult documents from our library at home, the Monumenta Germaniae Historica provide a copy delivery service for non-monographic literature on a pay-by-use basis via internet.

Simply research the document in our OPAC. All deliverable titles will appear listed with a button enabling you to place an order immediately. Copies will be delivered in electronic form within three work days (Monday to Friday, not including holidays).

Technical requirements

Use of the document delivery service requires a valid e-mail address to which the documents will be sent. Furthermore, you will need a computer with internet access in order to place orders, since this can only be done through the MGH OPAC. Additionally, the service requires an installed version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 and upwards). A free download of this program is available.

Who may use the service?

Our document delivery service is intended primarily for scholarly purposes. Use is restricted to private, non-commercial researchers. In order to receive the documents, you will be required to supply us with your complete address.

What can be ordered?

You may order copies of articles and papers from all journals and anthologies (such as anniversary publications and congress papers) listed in our OPAC. As determined by German copyright law (Urheberrechtsgesetz § 53a) some copyright restrictions apply to articles in individual journals with their own delivery conditions: We will inform you if this is the case. For large orders exceeding 50 pages, we reserve the right to refer your request to the Subito delivery service offered by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. If we are not able to carry out your order for reasons of conservation or because of technical or other difficulties, we will let you know without delay.

What does the delivery service cost?

Copy prices are oriented on the fixed price list “User group 1” (students, trainees, members of a university or a public research institution) set down by the international Subito document delivery service. For documents of up to 20 pages, a set price of 4 Euros applies; thereafter each additional copy will be charged at 0,10 Euro/page. For orders not placed through our OPAC and for complicated requests incurring additional expenses, we may apply a surcharge.

Please note that, since January 1, 2014 the MGH library is obliged by law to pay royalties of 2 Euros per copy to the VG Wort collecting society and must therefore commensurately raise the set costs per document.

In the case of large orders, we may ask for prepayment. Clients with outstanding bills will also be required to pay in advance.

How do I place an order?

1 Select a title.

To place an order, simply research the title in the MGH library OPAC. If the document is available for delivery, the link “document delivery” (Dokumentenlieferung) will appear beneath the title, connecting you with an online order form. The bibliographic details of the journal or anthology will be automatically supplemented. In some cases, it may be necessary to supply us with additional information (such as the name of the author, the title of the document, the pages required or the year of publication) in order to ensure that you receive the correct document. For articles in journals with pre-recorded data, complete bibliographic information will be automatically supplied. The last step is to fill in your personal data.

2 Delivery and invoice

Copies will be delivered via internet in the form of an electronic document in PDF-Format to be downloaded. We will send you an e-mail with a link to the document; the link is valid for the period of one week and will expire thereafter.

The invoice will also be sent to you per e-mail. For this purpose, you are required to fill in your postal address and your e-mail address in the order form. These data may be stored on your computer for future orders: If you wish to do so, simply click the button “Ja” (yes). Note that this will only work if you have agreed to allowing cookies on the homepage.

3 Payment

Due to certain fiscal restrictions, we can only accept payment by bank transfer at the present. Payments made using credit cards, PayPal or other money transfer services will not be received. Please inform yourself about additional fees which may apply. For orders abroad, in particular outside the European Union, we may also require prepayment. This can lead to delays.

Copyright regulations

Please note that in placing a document delivery order, you agree to comply with the applicable copyright regulations, in particular with those entailed in the German copyright law (Urheberrechtsgesetz) § 53 UrhG governing reproductions for private and other usage. In accordance with the General Agreement on Document Delivery (Gesamtvertrag Kopiendirektversand), § 2, you are obliged to erase electronically delivered documents from your computer after having printed them.
