The Arno Borst Scholarship

for postgraduate medieval research
(postdoctoral scholarship)

In 1996, the renowned medieval scholar Arno Borst (1925-2007) established the Arno-Borst-Stiftung zur Förderung der mediävistischen Geschichtswissenschaften (Arno Borst Foundation for the Promotion of Mediaeval Studies), the revenues of which have contributed to fund research at the MGH. With these funds, the MGH have now created the Arno Borst Scholarship to support young historians at the postdoctoral level, offering a three-year scholarship with a stipend corresponding to the level set by DFG guidelines (currently 2000 € monthly). The first Arno Borst Scholarship will be awarded on February 1, 2022.

To be eligible, applicants must have already completed their PhD in Medieval History or the subject of „Historische Wissenschaften“, ideally with a thesis related to editions. Applications should be based on a project involving either an edition or a study of textual transmission conforming to the MGH publications programme.

The application deadline for the 2022 Arno Borst Scholarship is December 31, 2021.

Besides the usual application documents (curriculum vitae, certificates, publications list), please include a project outline of no more than 5 pages, sending them together in a single PDF file by e-mail to the president of the MGH, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Martina Hartmann (martina.hartmann@mgh.de).

The MGH support gender equity and measures aimed at raising the ratio of women in higher research. Applications by women are expressly welcome and will be favoured in the case of otherwise comparable eligibility, qualifications and achievements, providing no other personal factors apply.
