A Well-Loved Tradition

Since 2010, the annual visit to the Monumenta Germaniae Historica by the Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris in the context of the institute’s summer study trip „Munich pour les médiévistes“ has become a traditional event that we all look forward to. This year’s full programme included, besides the MGH, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (Central Institute for Art History), the Historisches Kolleg, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library), the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities), the history department of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv (Bavarian State Archive) and, so to say the icing on the cake, Nymphenburg Palace.

The international group of visitors under the leadership of Dr Kirsten Wallenwein included participants from France, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland. They were particularly interested in how MGH editions are produced and in the possibilities of working at the Munich institute, leading Dr Kirsten Wallenwein to express hope for the future of the fundamental aspects of the work of the MGH: „Maybe there will be more interest in editing texts and young scholars will become more enthusiastic for medieval Latin and palaeography“: „Vielleicht wächst das Interesse am Edieren erneut, und die jungen Forschenden begeistern sich wieder stärker für Mittellatein und Paläographie.“

Merci pour la visite et à la prochaine!
