„Aus einem alten Rollschrank. Neue Funde zu Robert Holtzmann“ (Discoveries in an old cabinet: New finds about Robert Holtzmann)
Online-lecture (Zoom) by Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Martina Hartmann (MGH)
Wednesday, 6. May 2026, 6 p.m.
Robert Holtzmann (1873-1946) studied under Harry Bresslau and began his scholarly career at the MGH Diplomata, where he worked for five years. Thereafter, he rose through the academic ranks with professorships at the universities of Gießen, Breslau (Wroclaw), Halle, and Berlin, whereby he nevertheless retained his lifelong contact with the Monumenta. The archive of the Deutsches Historisches Institute in Rom stores a volume of his diaries from the years 1941-1946, in which Holtzmann himself censored passages that were critical of the Nazi Regime. In 2025, a living relative discovered new records that reveal how the medieval scholar experienced the brutal political and social transformations under the Hitler dictatorship, including an uncensored diary of the years 1932-1936 and his address book written in 1938/39. A comparison with the famous testimonies of Victor Klemperer and Jochen Klepper reveals the „blind spots“ in Robert Holtzmann’s account.
Martina Hartmann is president of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica since 2018. Her research interests focus on the Early and High Middle Ages, gender studies, and – particularly inspired by the 200th anniversary of the MGH – the history of the sciences.
